Premiere: Sun-Riser stirs up trouble in new ‘Fightman Floater’ video

Alt-rock trio Sun-Riser mocks the challenges of getting the word out about a show with the band’s debut video for “Fightman Floater,” premiering here today.

The video for the band’s single sets the musicians — Evanston’s Kevin Conroy, Wilmette native Aaron Baer and Jesse Kay from Iowa — on a madcap quest passing out show flyers to a cast of wacky and comic characters, all while dodging a cop bent on stopping the party.

Shot by director Michael Hickey, cousin of lead vocalist Conroy, the video focuses on having fun while telling a story.

“We spent multiple nights pitching ideas to each other, writing out what we were going to do and getting things organized, and we just fell in love with this silly idea,” Conroy said. “We wanted it to be as much about the video as it was about the song, telling a story and not having the band come in until the end.”

“Fightman Floater,” dropped last August, was the first single by the Chicago-area band, but Conroy said there are more songs in the works due out later this year. Fans can get a taste of them at upcoming shows. Sun-Riser, who last weekend moved on to the semifinal round of Moe’s Tavern’s Battle of the Bands (set for March 6 and 7), has a show at Wire next week (March 5) and will be running the video at an April 19 release party.

The March of the Music Videos showcase, set at Navigator Taproom, will feature “Fightman Floater” along with a number of other videos and projects from local artists.

“It’s a way to thank the people involved with the project,” Conroy said. “The extras at the party scene, everybody involved. For fans to come by, say ‘Hi’ and have a drink.”
