Where you can see Smashing Pumpkins, Ted Nugent and other bands with local ties this summer

What do influential punk band Screeching Weasel, outspoken rocker Ted Nugent and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan have in common?

Controversy, of course. But also geography: All of them grew up in the suburbs.

And when it comes to well-known rockers, they’re not alone. So did some members of blink-182, Chevelle, Rise Against and Hootie & the Blowfish.

All seven acts have something else in common — they’re playing shows this summer for hometown fans.

Here’s a look at where you can see them perform before summer is out:

Screeching Weasel

The band — formed in Prospect Heights in the mid-1980s — proved one of the most influential in the punk era. But it’s been a bumpy road, most notably with frontman Ben Foster (aka Ben Weasel) getting into a fight with female fans at South by Southwest in 2011. He’s the only original member left, but he’s announced a new album and a single show this year: this month at the House of Blues.

Ted Nugent

The McHenry County Fair came under fire for hiring the controversial rocker from Palatine, a National Rifle Association board member who has made disparaging remarks about former President Barack Obama and others. Yet it became the fastest-selling show in the fair’s history.

When and where you can see him: 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the McHenry County Fair in Woodstock. mchenrycountyfair.com.

Chevelle

Grayslake brothers Pete and Sam Loeffler formed the post-grunge rock band back in 1995 and named it after the Chevy their dad liked. Younger brother Joe joined in, then later left, clearing the way for Deerfield’s Dean Bernardini.

When and where you can see them: 5:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Lollapalooza and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Tinley Park. livenation.com.

Hootie & the Blowfish

The popular rock band behind such ’90s hits as “Only Wanna Be With You” and “Let Her Cry” formed in South Carolina, but drummer Jim Sonefeld hails from Naperville. After a break that spanned more than a decade, frontman Darius Rucker announced a reunion tour — and a new album is in the works.

Smashing Pumpkins

The alt-rock band from ‘burbs — frontman Billy Corgan grew up in Glendale Heights, James Iha is from Elk Grove Village and Jimmy Chamberlin is a Joliet native — kicked off a reunion tour last year. They play the suburbs next month.

blink-182

The original rockers of blink-182 came together in Southern California, but they brought Alkaline Trio’s guitarist/vocalist Matt Skiba on board in 2015. Skiba grew up in McHenry.

When and where you can see them: At Riot Fest in Chicago, which runs Friday, Sept. 13 to Sunday, Sept. 15. Show times have not yet been announced. riotfest.org.

Rise Against

The punk rock band’s suburban roots run deep. Lead singer and songwriter Tim McIlrath grew up in Arlington Heights, while others have called Downers Grove and Norridge home.
