Ken Ugel ticks off the doldrums of moments passing with his opening guitar riff of “Secrets,” the new single premiering today by Chicago rock band The Million Reasons. The riff, which weaves its angst throughout the track, triggers a building aggression toward time passing unbroken by human connection.
The song, born late last year as the seasons turned to the city’s chillier winter months, explores darker themes than the band’s past fare.
“It was getting colder out,” Ugel said. “The vibe in the room was more pissed off. … It’s common to feel stuck in a certain space.”
Through vocalist Scott Nadeau’s searing and soaring vocals, “Secrets” examines the isolation felt literally during the deep freeze and metaphorically via society’s increasing dependence on technology.
“It’s about the current state of affairs,” Ugel explained, “and how we’re all just kind of fed up with all the excuses and people being glued to their phones, hidden behind computer screens instead of talking amongst themselves to figure out a solution.”
The Million Reasons — featuring Mike Nichols on guitar, Jason Cillo on bass and Colin Dill on drums — is releasing “Secrets” for purchase and on all streaming services Friday, July 12, as the first of three new songs (and a video) the band is planning to release in the next six months.
To complete the project, the band turned once again to Nick Stetina of Invigorate Recording in Downers Grove, who mastered the band’s recent releases. The trio of new songs conjure up a movement into darker territory for the band.
“‘Dizzy’ was a little more vibey, more of an atmospheric jam that we all love. ‘Battle of Sound’ was a little more upbeat,” Ugel said. “But we thought ‘Y’know, we’ve been listening to a lot of Royal Blood, Ghost and Mastadon.’ We wanted to write a song with a little more edge to it.”
“Secrets” is available for pre-order for $1 at the themillionreasons.bandcamp.com or pre-save on Spotify at the themillionreasons.com. You can also see The Million Reasons at a pair of upcoming shows in Chicago.
