Sound check: Swing to the Imperial Sound at Hey Nonny
Skokie’s Kenn Goodman and Freeport’s Rick Mosher harness their considerable talents from their time on the Chicago scene for their most recent project together, The Imperial Sound, a full-bodied swing band that encompasses a mix of pop, rock and Chicago’s soul legacy. Together with their bandmates — Jason Batchko, Gary Schepers, David Winer and David Smith — they produce a sound lively with power chords and jazzy horns, beautiful harmonies and danceable rhythms. The Imperial Sound celebrates the recent release of its debut album “The New AM” with a show at Arlington Height’s Hey Nonny with Rachel Drew and Tony Richards. 8:30 p.m. (doors at 7:30) Saturday, Jan. 26, at Hey Nonny, 10 S. Vail Ave., Arlington Heights. $15-$30. (224) 202-0750 or heynonny.com.
For the pups

Donations can also be made at ticketweb.com. 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at BaseCamp Pub, 5750 Lakeside Drive, Lisle. Suggested donation $10 or more. (331) 777-4712 or ticketweb.com.
Smoking Popes in Elgin
Northwest-suburban punk band the Smoking Popes, back in its original glorious lineup, heads up a night of rock at Elgin’s Legit Dogs & Ice. For a bit there it seemed like the show might not happen (because of occupancy restrictions — not very punk rock at all!), but the show is back on, supporting the band’s recent release, “Into the Agony,” along with guests The Turdles and Death & Memphis. 8:30 p.m. (doors at 7) Saturday, Jan. 26, at Legit Dogs & Ice, 51 S. Grove Ave., Elgin. $15. (708) 738-8306 or brownpapertickets.com.
Underbelly Hours kickoff at Cairo
Adela and Dan, hosts of The Underbelly Hours radio show on Elmhurst College’s WRSE-88.7 FM, are throwing a kickoff party for the 2019 season of the radio show, and you’re invited! (630) 876-9600 or cairoalehouse.com.
Friday Pilots and the gang
One of the best parts of the Chicago-area music scene is the comraderie between musicians. See that up close when Friday Pilots Club — purveyor of dark and edgy pop-rock with a tangible attitude and winner of last year’s national Next2Rock contest — headlines a night of fine musicians and scene friends: Northwest suburban August Hotel‘s ’80s-infused synth-pop, dreamy indie from Capital Soiree and funk-flavored synth-rock from Palatine’s Ember Oceans. The show is an all-ages night but it’s sure to be a party, so get there on time to catch all four bands. 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Schubas Tavern, 3159 N. Southport Ave., Chicago. $10-$13.
